If you’ve decided to try out a Femco® oil drain plug, we’ll gladly help you if you’re still doubting which oil plug and which oil plug size you need exactly.
The easiest place to start is on our website. We have a database of all the oil drain plug sizes for thousands of vehicles, engines and manufacturers. Generally, any piece of equipment that uses oil will have the sump plug size in its manual or product specifications.
If you are unable to find you vehicle on our website, you will need to know the size of your plug by measuring it yourself.
You will need to take out your original OEM oil sump plug to figure out which Femco oil drain plug you will need for your vehicle. Once you had the OEM plug out, follow these steps to know your oil drain plug size:
Measure Diameter
In order to do this you could use digital calipers (like the ones in the image), or use a ruler (this is not the best method, but will be your best bet if you don’t have these tools). Measure the width of the plug at the widest part of the threads.
If your plug measures 12mm you will need to start looking at plugs in the size range of “M12 x 1.25 to M12 x 1.75″. The “M12” refers to the diameter you measure from the widest part of the threads on your OEM sump plug.
Measure Thread Pitch
Thread pitch is either measured in threads per inch or the millimeters between each thread. In order to accurately measure this, you will need a thread pitch gauge. If you are measuring with the meteric system, this will determine the second part of your Femco drain plug size. For example, our M12x1.25 will have a pitch of 1.25 based on the gauge measurement.

Using The Correct Torque Key
The main advantage of using Femco® oil drain plugs, is of course the fact that except for the installation, you never need a key to drain the oil from your engine. So you never have to worry about not having the correct key at hand! Trying to loosen oil drain plugs with the wrong key can lead to broken plugs or damage to the crankcase. Of course you don’t want this! With a Femco oil drain plug, you can easily screw on the drain piece by hand.
When you’re installing a Femco® oil drain plug, you do need a key, namely a torque key. Take a good look at the dimensions of the oil drain plug you have chosen. According to the oil plug size, you can choose a torque key that matches that size. Tighten the oil drain plug securely, without tightening it too tightly. Now you have easily installed your oil drain plug!
